High Quality vs Faster mode
Person / portrait uses a portrait-specific human segmentation model that is better suited to hair, ears, faces and shoulders. Product / object uses the general high-quality model for non-human subjects. Faster mode remains available when speed matters more than the strongest automatic cutout.
Edge cleanup options
- Clean & natural is the recommended default for most photos.
- Softer / preserve fine detail keeps more semi-transparent edge detail, which can help with hair and soft boundaries.
- Crisper cutout removes more uncertain edge pixels and can help when bits of the original background remain.
Refine difficult cutouts manually
Automatic background removal can occasionally miss a narrow gap or remove part of a subject when people overlap, hair blends into the background or the scene contains foliage and similar colours. After the automatic cutout, open Refine Result to correct those areas directly on the image.
- Keep restores original pixels where part of the subject was removed.
- Erase removes remaining background pixels.
- Use Zoom and a smaller brush around fingers, hair, glasses and gaps between people.
- Brush softness creates a gentler correction around fine detail, while Edge feather softens the final transparency boundary.
- Undo, Redo and Reset let you correct mistakes without restarting the automatic removal.
Advanced cleanup for difficult hair and background remnants
The standalone Background Remover now includes the same refinement ideas used inside Passport Photo Maker. Clean edges re-evaluates uncertain boundary pixels, Smart erase removes a connected patch with a similar colour, and Refine edge targets a painted hair or object boundary. Fringe colour cleanup reduces colour contamination from the old background without simply erasing more of the subject.
Use the white, dark and magenta inspection backgrounds to reveal halos before downloading. The inspection background is only a preview aid; choose the separate Download background setting for transparent or solid-colour output.
How to get the best result
- Use the highest-quality original you have, especially for hair, fine objects or group photos.
- Good lighting and visible separation between the subject and background usually produce cleaner boundaries.
- If the result keeps background fragments, try Crisper cutout.
- If hair or fine edges look too harsh, try Softer / preserve fine detail.
- For HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, BMP or another unsupported input, use the Image Converter first and convert to JPG, PNG or WebP.
Supported input and output
JPG, PNG and WebP files can be processed directly. The finished cutout is downloaded as a transparent PNG so it can be used in product graphics, profile images, presentations, websites and design software.
Privacy and processing
The selected image is processed in the browser. The browser may download the processing runtime and model files needed by the tool, but the image itself is handled on the device during background removal.

What should I do if some background remains or part of the subject is missing?
Open Refine Result. Use Erase to remove remaining background and Keep to restore any part of the subject that was removed. Zoom in and use a smaller, softer brush for hair, fingers and narrow gaps.
Can I remove a stubborn colour fringe around hair?
Yes. Inspect the cutout on both a light and dark preview, then try Clean edges and the Fringe colour cleanup control. For a local problem, use Refine edge; for a connected patch of leftover background, use Smart erase.
