This is important because automatic detection can never understand every hairstyle, head covering, child photo or unusual camera angle perfectly. The blue guide gives you a visual target instead of hiding the crop logic.
Background removal is built into the passport-photo tool
If your document rules allow a replaced background, you do not need to leave this page. Choose white, off-white, light grey or a custom colour and prepare the background directly inside Passport Photo Maker. Small mistakes can be fixed with Keep and Erase brushes. For authorities that explicitly require an unaltered photograph, the preset warns you before background replacement because a clean-looking edit can still be unacceptable under that authority's rules.
Automated photo checks before download
The built-in checker looks for practical problems such as multiple faces, off-centre framing, estimated head size, low sharpness, very dark or very bright exposure, a busy background and insufficient source resolution. These checks are useful warnings, but they are not an official biometric approval service. You should still confirm expression, eyes, glasses, head coverings, shadows and photo age yourself.
Digital passport photo and exact-size print sheets
Download a single JPG or PNG at the preset's exact pixel dimensions. The editor also keeps a short-lived recovery copy in your browser so an accidental refresh does not automatically erase unfinished work. Presets with maximum upload sizes, such as a U.S. visa image, are automatically compressed toward the required limit. If you need printed photos, create 4 × 6 inch, 5 × 7 inch, A4, US Letter or 8 × 10 inch sheets with multiple copies and optional cut lines. The print-ready PDF uses physical dimensions so that printing at Actual Size is more reliable than printing a normal image through software that may silently resize it.
Important: editing rules are different by country
Some passport authorities explicitly prohibit computer alteration. For example, the U.S. Department of State says passport photos should be original and unedited, the UK says printed passport photos must be unaltered by computer software, Canada requires photos taken by a commercial photographer and unaltered, and Australian citizenship guidance says the image must be unedited. This tool therefore separates technical sizing and cropping from optional background changes and warns when a strict preset is selected.

Pick a size, make your edits, then check the actual file
The four-step studio separates document sizing, uploading, editing and downloading. Country presets are references, not a certificate of compliance. Use the issuing authority’s current instructions for the exact application route; the Custom option accepts millimetres, inches or pixels when those instructions differ.
Save an editable project, not just a finished photo
A JPG is a finished image. A UVs project file retains the original photo, the crop, the background mask and the editor settings so you can continue later. Save the .uvsp file to your device and reopen it through Open project. It contains a personal photo and is not encrypted; store it privately. Downloaded project files do not expire automatically.
Optional browser recovery keeps the current project for up to 24 hours after its latest edit. It is not cloud storage. Private browsing, clearing site data, storage limits or a different browser can prevent recovery. Turn recovery off on shared computers and save a project file for important work.
Print the requested number of copies, even across several sheets
Choose a paper size, margins, gap and number of copies. Automatic orientation selects the better of portrait and landscape. When the requested copies need more than one sheet, the PDF includes all sheets and the image download contains all sheet JPGs in a ZIP. Dimensions are retained; photos are not shrunk just to squeeze in more copies.
Before using expensive photo paper, download the separate test ruler and check its 50 mm and 100 mm measurements with a physical ruler. Set the print dialog to Actual size or 100%. Printer settings can override document dimensions.
Inspect hair and refine without restarting
The person mask is attached to the original photo, not to the visible crop. Keep and Erase strokes move with the image. Inspect detail provides a magnified preview; Show mask makes small gaps easier to see. Undo and Redo cover editor changes and completed brush strokes within the current session. These controls can correct an imperfect cutout but do not invent missing detail or guarantee an acceptable official photo.

Are my photo files uploaded?
The crop, layout, output and quality checks run in the browser. Face detection and background-removal model files may be downloaded by your browser, but the selected photo is processed on your device for those operations. To protect unfinished work from an accidental refresh, the Passport Photo Maker can keep a recovery copy of the photo and adjustments in this browser for up to 24 hours; you can clear it at any time.
Can I save an unfinished photo and continue on another device?
Yes. Save project file downloads an editable .uvsp file containing your original image, mask and settings. Transfer it privately and use Open project. No account is required. The file is not encrypted and does not expire automatically.
Does the print PDF include all requested copies?
Yes. Up to 100 requested copies are arranged over as many sheets as needed. If the chosen photo cannot fit on the paper at its actual size and margins, the tool asks you to change the paper or margins rather than shrinking the photo.
Will changing the crop bring the old background back?
The background mask uses original-image coordinates. Moving, cropping, rotating or flipping applies the same transformation to the image and its mask. Sizing-only mode deliberately shows the original appearance.
Can I trust the automated photo checks as approval?
No. They help identify technical issues and possible framing or lighting problems. They do not check every official rule and do not guarantee acceptance. Check the exact issuing authority’s instructions.
How can I remove a halo or background left around hair?
Run Clean edges, then inspect the cutout against black and white preview backgrounds. Reduce colour fringe can help with pale edge colours. Smart erase removes a connected patch of a sampled colour, while Refine edge applies local colour-based cleanup where you brush. Keep and Erase remain available. Undo reverses these edits. Fine hair against a similar-colour background can still require careful manual correction.
